Dickson Commissions Bayelsa Polo Club

Bayelsa State Governor, Hon. Henry Seriake Dickson on Monday 10th February 2020, commissioned the Bayelsa Polo Club. This is coming after the commissioning of the Bayelsa golf course some weeks ago. Historically, the idea of constructing a polo club in Bayelsa was initiated by HRM, Alfred Diette Spiff who incidentally as a young naval officer, brought the game to Rivers State. This marks the beginning of polo in the heartland of the Ijaw nation.

The club is situated in the New Yenagoa City, one of the fastest growing regions in the state.

The Vice-President of the club, Mr. Tupele Difa who is also a polo player commended the Bayelsa State governor, Hon Henry Seriake Dickson for allowing Bayelsa to be planted in the map as one state that can host a polo tournament. He said the turf is promising and the facilities are about the best in the country.

Governor Dickson while cutting the tape commended the organizers of the polo tournament stressing that it was always his dream to host tournaments in the state.

‘Every project we have embarked on these past eight years, every investment we have made in education, health, infrastructure and human capital development was primarily to open Bayelsa to the world and attract the world to Bayelsa.’

‘We just commissioned our International Airport and now the polo club and there are many more projects to commission’.

‘Nigeria left Bayelsa behind and that’s why I was in a hurry to catch up. Those who don’t understand our passion have chosen to read political meaning to our humble efforts.’

With this the governor calls on all polo players and sponsors of the game to add Bayelsa to their list of destination.

‘Bayelsa is ready to accommodate you, we are peaceful, warm and Accommodating.’

The event ended with a match between Team Bayelsa and Team Rivers where Team Bayelsa won by 5 to 1. The governor was also presented a souvenir honouring him as the founder and Grand Patron of the Bayelsa Polo club
