Though, I have privately sent you messages which you rightly acknowledged when you had your Birthday @53, but I strongly felt compelled to openly appreciate you in view of the positive value you have added to humanity irrespective of their ethnicity, tribe, language, religion and colour. I will certainly not forgive myself if at this juncture I don’t openly appreciate you for the world to see your virtues and passion for Nigeria.

He’s a Prince, a direct descendant of the Sokoto Caliphate Royal Dynasty, yet unassuming. He is a detribalized Nigerian, so passionate about Africa’s most populous nation moving forward. He is a workaholic, a very focused personality who loves everything about Nigeria: from culture, politics, sports and the people. Alhaji Yusuf Suleiman, a-two time Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is an endowment to Nigeria since in every generation, nature creates few people who positively transform the lives of the people.

Alhaji Suleiman, as a practitioner of political history, can be likened to event of 1979 elections where the Great Nigerian People’s Party (GNPP) presidential candidate Alhaji Waziri Ibrahim had nurtured advocacy for politics without malice appealed for participation without the normal ‘do or die’ or “make-it-or-break-it” mindsets of the political class where he had tendered a new dimension to approach towards politics as it is in any civilized society, Suleiman surely believes in this principle and philosophy. This soft spoken Harvard University graduate once told me: “It is Almighty Allah who decides who leads the people, not man. Words alone fail me to recount your numerous philanthropic gestures to humanity because they are countless like the sounds of the sea shore and uncountable like the stars in the sky. If all Nigerian politicians are like Suleiman, so passionate in redeeming Nigeria genuinely, then our economy will be great, our agricultural farm produce will be plenty and cost of food will be very cheap in Nigeria. He’s highly consulted globally on issues regarding economy and agriculture. It is high time the present administration of President Muhammadu Buhari who vowed: “I am for Everybody, I am for Nobody”, taps into this raw, economic knowledge of Suleiman so that together, all Nigerians can witness food security, economic progress which will bring life-back to various homes across the nation. He is indeed a great Nigerian, economic genius and hero of all times. God bless Nigeria.

As the local election in United Kingdom (UK) draws near on Thursday, 5th May 2016, all UK political parties are in explosion. The Commonwealth Liberation Party takes a different position. Queen Victoria died and in that era the German Nation fought the British Kingdom in the First World War and Prince Leopold Charles Edward joined the German to fight against his own Country. Saraki's Trial: Coalition Condemns Oyegun's Statement

The Coalition of Civil Society and the All Progressives Congress Democratic Vanguard have condemned in strong terms statements credited to the All Progressives Congress (APC) Chairman, Dr Odigie Oyegun, saying the party would not hesitate to sacrifice the position of the Senate President for the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in the case of an eventual conviction of the incumbent President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki, by the Code of Conduct Tribunal

In a statement made available to Mail Express Online by the Coalitions' convener, Olugbenga Olumegbon and Secretary, Olufemi Akindele, said: "We categorically State that as Politically conscious Nigerians, we are not unmindful of the fact that the entire scenario of the trial of the Senate President is Politically motivated judging by the fact that despite being Governor of Kwara State for 8years and Senator from the same state, the Code of Conduct, never deemed it necessary to invite nor investigate facts surrounding the asset declarations by Dr. Saraki until he eventually became the President of the Nigerian Senate against the wishes of some demi-gods and Political Lords in June 2015".

The statement added that it is disturbing that persons like the National Chairman of APC, Dr. John Odigie Oyegun and some of his co-travellers are in the pull- him-down campaign against Dr. Bukola Saraki, and "going the extra mile to undermine the sacrificial effort of Dr. Saraki and many of his likemind supporters, in dethroning the monsterous PDP, from government at that crucial moment of our National History".

"May we remind Nigerians, that in as much that we are committed to the Anti corruption effort of the incumbent APC administration in our country, we remained opposed to every attempt to use such as a tool of intimidating perceived political opponents just for the purpose of hijacking political positions", the statement added.

The coalitions reminded Oyegun of the courage displayed by Saraki in leading the revolution which later became known as the new PDP, and how it eventually aided the victory of the APC at the Presidential election in 2015.

The coalitions also reminded "those who have placed their inordinate ambitions above the collective interest of the revolutionary team of the APC and the mass of Nigerian people to remember that we may not have been where we are today, without the zeal, fearlessness and determination of the men and women of noble intention, led by Dr. Bukola Saraki to wrestle power from the then ruling party, PDP".

They therefore demanded "for a stoppage to the use of institutional authorities for the pursuit of individual political ambitions or primordial interest".

Gov. Dickson Denies Wrongdoing Over Assembly’s Refusal To Swear-In Three Assembly Members-Elect

Bayelsa State Governor Henry Seriake Dickson distanced himself from controversy triggered by the alleged refusal of the leadership of the State House of Assembly to swear-in three elected members of the opposition parties into the Assembly.

The State House of Assembly had in the last few weeks been criticized over its refusal to swear-in Alfred Belemote (All Progressives Grand Alliance, Brass 2), ‎Gabriel Ogbara (African Democratic Congress, Ogbia 2) and Gibson Munalayefa (Labour Party, Ogbia 2) two months after being declared winners of the Assembly election by the Court of Appeal.

The controversy also led to a letter of warning sent to the governor by the State Police Command and a coalition of elder statesmen known as the Bayelsa First Initiative. They warned about a possible breach of security following the refusal of the State House of Assembly to swear-in the three elected members.

Critics have accused Mr. Dickson of colluding with the State Assembly leadership to prevent the three elected members from being sworn in.

The State Commissioner of Information and Orientation, Jonathan Obueibite, dissociated the governor from the alleged controversy.

“The Bayelsa State Governor has never interfered with the affairs of the State House of Assembly. The State Assembly is not subject to the unilateral control of the State Executive,” Mr. Obueibite said.

The spokesman described the controversy as an “internal affair,” adding, “the people should not drag the State Governor into it. As a former legislator, the Governor has promoted independence of the legislature.”

Mr. Obuebite also denied the claim that the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Kombowei Benson, instructed the aggrieved State Assembly members-elect to plead with the Governor to be sworn-in, stating, “it is a lie and I challenge them to come forward with such evidence on the claim.”

He also denied knowledge of the letter of warning issued by the Bayelsa State Police Command.

“We are not aware of such a letter. We heard and read about it on the pages of the newspaper like everybody.”

2016 Appropriation Bill: These Dishonorable “Honourables” Must Resign Immediately – SNAI

The Save Nigeria Anti-Corruption Initiative (SNAI) wishes to condemn in strong term, the fraud and manipulations, that the Nigeria 2016 Appropriation bill was subjected to in the National Assembly in the course of its passage, particularly the role of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honorable Yakubu Dogara and his accomplice, Hon. Abdulmumin Jibril who is the Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation.

Going by the recent revelations, there is no doubt that Speaker Dogara, actively collaborated with Hon. Jibrin, whose Committee was majorly responsible for the entire process owning to the complacent nature of the Chairman and members of the same Committee at the upper chamber of the National Assembly, the Senate.

It should be noted that the Nigerian House of Representatives and some elements in it have continued to abuse their various positions, in justifying the persoanlization of the resources of the Nigerian State, particularly those that are meant to provide meaningful interventions to uplift their living condition, such as the Lagos-Calabar rail line project.

It is saddening that members of the House of Representatives are now blaming the Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation, Abdulmumin Jibrin for tampering with the budget, which is in tandem with our Independent investigation which shows, that most of the projects used in altering the content of the 2016 Budget were those in the constituency’s of Honourable Jibril, Speaker Dogara and their accomplices.

Beyond the intuition that says “I know one when I see one,” how do you go about measuring the effectiveness of any given legislature if not in the circumstance like this. That is simple legislative appropriation scrutiny and approval?

What do we want our legislatures of the 21st century to be? Of course we want them to be effective and good. The challenge is to remain true to the fundamental purposes of representative democracy and the legislative system.

The bottom line is that some honorables are decent, hard-working people. No, really. We are all justified in feeling angry about those that have fallen short of the high standards expected of those in public life. The conduct of some politicians has been, quite simply, a disgrace. A few may well be guilty of criminal offences and should feel the same force of the law that would be felt by, say, a benefit cheat.
Speaker Dogara and Hon. Abdulmumin Jibrin have already been found guilty in the court of public opinion.
To this end, to salvage what is left of the act of sabotage, unpatriotic tendency and blatant abuse of priviledge, we demand an immediate resignation of the speaker of the house of representatives, Yakubu Dogara and the removal of Jubrin as chairman of the house committee on appropriation.
Our nation can not afford this light handed individuals as leaders else our future be collectively doomed…

Federal Government Imposing More Hardships On Nigeria With VAT Increment - Fayose

Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has said that the Federal Government was planning to impose more hardships on Nigerians by increasing Value Added Tax (VAT) from the current five per cent to 10 per cent, describing the move as insensitive to the plight of Nigerians who are suffering from the bad economic policies of the President Mohammadu Buhari led All Progressives Congress (APC) government.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo had said on Thursday, in Lagos that the current five per cent VAT rate in the country was very low, and went on to add that the Federal Government would increase the taxpayer base this year.

Reacting through his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Governor Fayose said any increment in VAT or any other tax being paid by Nigerians at this time will further make life unbearable for the people.

“Nigerians are suffering and the little that they have, federal government is planning to take back through VAT increment, this is wickedness!

“Under three months, electricity tariff was increased despite epileptic power supply, N50 stamp duty was imposed on bank customers for money received into their accounts via electronic transfer, cash and cheques; petrol is being sold for as high as N400 per litre and now they are talking about increasing VAT to 10 per cent, this is the height of insensitivity to the plight of Nigerians,” he said.

The governor, who lamented the increase in the cost of living of Nigerians, occasioned by the bad economic policies of the Federal Government, said “even recent figures from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) revealed that prices of food have hit a record high and inflation is worsening.

“How can government be considering 100 per cent increment in VAT when businesses are folding up, prices of essential commodities have skyrocketed, millions of Nigerians are losing their jobs and those who are still employed are no longer getting paid regularly?

“For even contemplating the increment of VAT at this difficult time shows that the Buhari-led government does not care about the welfare of the citizens and only God will save the poor masses from the hands of this government.”

Governor Fayose said rather than imposing more hardships on Nigerians, President Buhari should seek help from experts on how best to revive the country’s economy, adding that; “As at today, the Buhari-led government is yet to show that it has any clue to the revival of the economy.”

Even in your diatribe, you admitted that Governor Fayose was denied visa in 2009 and hadn't returned to apply for another visa. We spoke to him (Fayose) today and he admitted that he was not granted visa in 2009 because of his corruption trial. As per his family, you only need to read the report to understand what was written. However, I am sure you don't read. Governor Fayose had promised to put out all the passport pages and visa since 2009, how come you're only able to put out for 2015 for two people?

 You keep relying on your ability to pay for "positive reporting" as noted in the document barring Fayose from entering the US, you forget that it won't always work!

My attention has been drawn to the latest mischief from one of the All Progressives Congress (APC) propaganda organs, Sahara Reporters that the Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose and his immediate family members were barred from traveling to the United States of America (USA) and I  wish to state that this is another lie from the pit of hell.

Even though I am not unmindful of the fact that Sahara Reporters and its Jankara brand of journalism should not attract the attention of sane minds, I feel oblige to set the records straight.          

Governor Fayose has travelled to the US only twice in his life and since he became governor, he has not had any reason to apply for US visa since he became governor in 2014, not to talk of being restricted from traveling to the country.  

It is on record that during the governor's trial by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the court ordered that his international passport be deposited with the court. When the passport was released to him in 2009, he applied to the US embassy for the renewal of his visa and the embassy denied him of the renewal on the
premise that he was still under trial.   

Governor Fayose won the EFCC case in 2014 and not only that he was discharged and acquitted, N10 million cost was awarded against the EFCC.

The records in FRN Vs Mr. Ayodele Fayose, Charge. No. FHC,. L.. 179c, 2006 and the ruling discharging and acquiting the governor delivered on October 30, 2014 by Hon. Justice Adamu Hobon are there for anyone to see.           

Contrary to the lies from Sahara Reporters the governor's sons still have USA visa valid till March 2017 while that of his wife will expire this year. His wife and children travel to the USA regularly and they were in the USA during the last summer. Records of their trips to the US are there for anyone to verify.       

It is shameful that Sahara Reporters can elevate its 'Boolekaja journalism' to the ridiculous level of dropping the name of the US President Barack Obama with the governor's application for visa renewal of 2009 (seven years ago).   

It is even more shameful that Sahara Reporters opted to be silent over the fact that the election won by Governor Fayose was applauded by the US and the immediate past US ambassador to Nigeria visited the governor before and after he was elected.  

However, I wish to let Sahara Reporters and its sponsors know that Governor Fayose is undeterred. He will continue to speak on the policies of the President Mohammadu Buhari's APC government. The Jankara propaganda medium did more than this before the 2014 election and its sponsors lost woefully.           

Invasion of Ekiti State by the armed men of the Department of State Services (DSS) failed, police invasion also failed,  this renewed effort at maligning Governor Fayose by Sahara Reporters, the APC's agent of falsehood is definitely dead on arrival.

President Buhari Must Sack of Dr. Ibe Kachukwu - SNAI

The Save Nigeria Anti-corruption Initiative is worried about the refusal of President Muhammadu Buhari, to sack the Minister of States for Petroleum and Group Managing Director(GMD) of the Nigerians National Petroleum Corporation NNPC, Mr. Ibe Kachukwu, over the persistent fuel scqarcity in the country. We are deeply worried by the agonising conditions, that Nigerians have been subjected to in the last coupe of weeks, which has in turn, engendered other severe conditions & grounded our once robust economy into a halt with no ends in sight despite miscalculated policies & utopian promises of the NNPC under the management of Mr. Ibe Kachukwu.

It is not a gainsay that at the inception of this administration,the Federal government have promised to revamp the oil sector,re-organise the NNPC,purge out oil sabouteurs & steady the sector, which remains the adrenaline of our economy. But alas,10 months after,Nigerians are witnessing the most unprecedented fuel scarcity in our 56 yrs history of self-governance.

However,it is disturbing to note that the management of the NNPC under Mr. Kachukwu, has been running from pillar to posts with counter-productive measures & cascading policies to ameliorate the situation for adequate supply of fuel to Nigerians without an iota of success as filling stations are now Nigerians second abode.

In the last ten months,Nigerians have been denied opportunities of celebrating their holidays namely Sallah,Christmas,New Year & Easter festivities as Mr. Ibe Kachikwu’s promises of adequate supply never materialised,forcing Nigerians to spend their holidays on queues, as it has now graduated to a daily basis struggle to purchase to purchase fuel.

We cannot quickly forget the attempt by Mr. Kachikwu to insult the sensibilities of Nigerians few days ago wyen he asked Nigerians to wait till May before steady supply as he’s not a magician!

As Nigerians continue to experience this untold hardship, it is our strong view that it is a symptom of gross incompetence and chronic laziness, for Mr. Ibe Kachukwu to continue his blame game, without considering other measures to sustain our consumptive economic pattern which is premised on adequate supply of fuel nationwide without bureaucratic excuses.

Our problems are not the result of global economic cycles;our problems are the results of counter-productive national paradigms & self-limiting frameworks of the State, which has placed incompetent hands like Mr. Kachikwu in such sensitive positions as the GMD of the NNPC.

We therefore unequivocally demand that President Buhari should sack Mr. Kachukwu and also appoint independently, a new Group Managing Director for the NNPC, in the overriding interest of the suffering people of Nigeria.

In conclusion, we wish to remind Minister Ibe Kachikwu that children can be pardoned for been afraid of darkness;but it’s unpardonable for adults to be afraid of light. Nigerians are tired of excuses and now is the time to take a bow!

The Panama Papers & Buhari’s Fight Against Corruption

It was hardly surprising that the names of some Nigerian politicians, including Senate President, Bukola Saraki, Gen. T.Y Danjuma, Sen. David Mark and former Delta State Governor, James Ibori, appeared in the leak of confidential documents from one of the world’s most secretive companies, Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca. The leaked files show how Saraki and his wife, Toyin Saraki secretly owned assets and bank accounts offshore running in millions of dollars, which Saraki reportedly left out while declaring his assets to the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB). Although Saraki has denied any wrongdoing saying he fully complied with the law on asset declaration, it is indeed tempting to say the timing is ominous, as it seems to vindicate the case against Saraki, who is standing trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) for false declaration of assets. Unfortunately, the Presidency seems too preoccupied with distractions to leverage the renewed global focus on the issue of illicit financial flows to bolster the fight against corruption and money laundering that has all but brought Nigeria to its knees. It is indeed sad.

The bombshell revelations of secret offshore accounts tied to more than 140 politicians and public officials from over 50 countries are sending shock waves through halls of power across the world, from the USA to faraway Australia. Within 48 hours, the largest leak of confidential documents in history had shaken the foundations of power around the world, triggering the resignation of Iceland’s prime minister and sending political shock waves from Pakistan to Argentina to Ukraine. Even as prosecutors and officials across the world have announced investigations into the Panama Papers revelations, the expectation was that Nigerian anti-graft agencies would be seeking collaboration with their foreign partners to hold the embattled Senate President accountable, as his trial opened last Tuesday. It defies logic as to why Nigerian authorities will continue to labor under the silly illusion that they can fight graft.

Saraki is alleged to have failed to declare at least four offshore assets listed under his wife's name that appear in the leaked documents, obtained by a German newspaper and shared with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists. But like other powerful politicians, Saraki knows how to outmaneuver the law. The other Nigerian politician named in the leaks is former Delta governor, James Ibori, who pleaded guilty in a London court in 2012 to money laundering offenses. Ibori admitted using his position as governor to launder up to $75 million through a network of offshore companies, although some estimates the total amount he embezzled at over $250 million. Ibori, who was sentenced to 13-years in prison, stole millions of dollars to support a lavish lifestyle that included six houses in London and a fleet of Range Rovers, Bentleys and Mercedes cars. Mossack Fonseca was the registered agent of four offshore companies connected to Ibori and his family members. 

Without leaks like this, nothing would be publicly known about the tax haven companies now exposed, and next to nothing would be known by the authorities in the countries affected. It is worth-recalling that Ibori was tried and acquitted by Nigerian courts for the same crimes that he pleaded guilty in London. Therefore, if Saraki considered Nigeria's third most senior politician behind President Buhari and Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo escapes Nigerian laws because of loopholes and leniency in the system, Nigerians expect the international community to hold him accountable. The government’s failure to issue an official statement on the Panama Papers is unconscionable for a country that has probably experienced the greatest illegal outflow as a percentage of GDP.

According to the UN High Panel on Illicit Financial Flows from Africa, the continent lost about $850 billion dollars between 1970 and 2008. An estimated $217.7 billion dollars was illegally transferred out of Nigeria over that period, while Egypt lost $105.2 billion dollars and South Africa more than $81.8 billion. According to Raymond Baker, Director of the Washington DC-based Global Financial Integrity, Losing such a staggering amount to illegal acts, in a country blighted by underdevelopment, characterized by huge infrastructural deficit, dehumanizing conditions of living, rising poverty and youth unemployment, among other socio-economic malaise, is criminal.

While the millions of documents have only begun to be examined, the names of Saraki and Ibori are not meant to suggest that these are, by any means, the only people who have plundered Nigeria. There will be many more revelations as well as the opportunity to analyze them more broadly. Ilicit financial flows do not only stifle economic growth and development, it is also a potential source of political instability and insecurity. The Panama Papers, together with the President’s resolve to fight corruption are useful and capable of creating public awareness about the problem, they are certainly insufficient. If Nigeria is serious about tackling the problem of corruption and money laundering, the authorities must first identify the actors and sources of such illicit funds and block the flow.

To be sure, the main actors are usually known to high ranking government officials and in many cases are actually their cronies. Traceable to blatant crimes, drug trafficking, piracy, oil bunkering and such other illegalities, these funds flow, unfortunately, having been aided by government officials, even as law officers look the other way while government departments and revenue agencies are used as conduit pipes. Merely lamenting the situation and calling for help from the international community as Buhari has been doing is not enough. The President should take decisive steps, show utmost sincerity by demonstrating strong political will to fight corruption in its entirety.

Such a war against illicit financial flows can only be won if leaders lend themselves to an exemplary lifestyle devoid of corruption. President Buhari cannot be credited with sufficient political will to fight corruption in Nigeria, when his hands are tight. His election was financed by people with questionable credentials; some of whom have stolen the country blind. Some indicted for corruption are even in his cabinet. Therefore, he should look within. The glorification of corrupt officials through appointments or indiscriminate state pardons does no good to the image of Nigeria. Buhari’s demands for assistance from western nations to fight the scourge, though appealing, are not helped by his actions or inaction.

Buhari must take necessary measures to sanitize the financial sector, and restructure the country in ways that are expressive of fiscal autonomy for the federating units. There must be oversight to ensure banks desist from aiding and abetting money laundering and government should adopt and codify all international anti-money laundering protocols and establish effective enforcement mechanisms that money launderers will be unable to circumvent. The grand strategy should also include capacity building for anti-corruption within the bureaucracy of government, especially horizontal accountability, which involves mutual checking, annulling and righting actions and inaction of state institutions.

Above all, the proposed strategy should include remodeling Nigeria’s politics, removing its current commercial value and making it attractive only to genuine servants. The point must be stressed that corruption is a serious socio-economic and political issue that should not be treated with kid gloves. The time has come for the government of the day to tackle this challenge headlong. There is need to articulate a national strategy to combat this scourge. That strategy must begin with exemplary conduct of the leadership of the country who must claim the moral high ground through self-purging. Corruption, apart from being systemic, is also partly a question of character failure, and the presidency is pre-eminently a place for moral leadership.
